Kaffi Ilmur welcomes guests in a friendly manner in one of the oldest houses in beautiful downtown Akureyri. Enjoy delicious coffee and cakes, soups, salad bar, some light fare and drinks as well as tradition and history. Kaffi Ilmur started out as a saddler’s shop and later, it became a goldsmith’s, overlooking the fjord before the land was extended and more shops were built. Today, after extensive restoration, the granddaughter of Ingmar, the saddler, has opened a café, enabling visitors to take a step back in time, surrounded by the original walls, pictures and furniture – as well as the novel use of the former flooring and roof and some of the artefact excavated from the area. With the healthy lunches served upstairs and the delicious snacks served with the drinks downstairs, this is a winning combination that is very attractive to customers. On warm days, you can sit outside at the tables, sheltered from any wind. They offer a varied and hearty breakfast and the lunch is designed to be both wholesome and healthy, whilst the snacks are both traditional Icelandic favourites and fresh creations. It’s lovely spot to take a break from sightseeing or shopping while enjoying Eyjafjörður – the beautiful fjord in which Akureyri lies. See more at on their website.
The gourmet, home-made pies, and the coconut creme pie is especially delicious along with their most popular cake, Happy Magnus. They also offer choices of hearty soups and a salad bar, a perfect lunch to fuel you through the day. Kaffi Ilmur has a great selection of glutein-free options, so everyone should find something of their liking.
When passing through Akureyri, my husband and I stopped at this spot for a coffee during a break driving the ring road. Delicious coffee and cakes, very nice the owners and a cozy warm place to recharge. They even had a few gluten free cake options, sweet.
