Fold Anna is a warm crafty shop that offers its visitors handmade goods from the Icelandic wool. Staff can be seen knitting behind the counter while you browse this outlet loaded with the traditional Icelandic lopapeysur and assorted crafty items, but it is worth mentioning that Fold Anna is the only store in Iceland that only sells hand-knitted garments.
But what is so special about the Icelandic wool? It all starts with the Icelandic sheep.
The Icelandic sheep is unique as the purity of strain has been protected by centuries of isolation and a total absence of contact with other breeds of sheep. This means that the wool it produces has no counterpart anywhere else in the world. Evolving over 1100 years of exposure to the sub-Arctic climate, the Icelandic wool has a distinctive combination of inner and out fibres. The outer fibres are long, glossy, tough and water repellant, while the inner over are fine, soft and insulting, providing a high resistance to cold.
Nature plays the leading role in the whole manufacturing process of the Icelandic wool. Only natural energy sources such as geothermal and hydroelectric power are used in its production, while the sheep from which the wool is harvested graze freely in summer on vast tracts of virgin land.
The Icelandic wool and it’s natural benefits (being warm, water repellant, lightweight, breathable, odour resistant and biodegradable) is exceptionally fitting as a raw material for designing multifunctional apparel, suitable for outdoor activity as well as city life.
